HipCheck Installation and User Guide
1 Introducing HipCheck
The HipCheck mobility service is a Me Inc. product that allows you to monitor and manage the basic health of UNIX and Windows systems. You can view operating system activity, set triggers for critical system conditions, receive alerts about problems, and perform corrective actions, either from your Microsoft® Windows Mobile-based device or Windows® computer.
This guide is designed to get you started using the HipCheck mobility service. Specifically, this guide can help you:
- install HipCheck agents and clients, and configure HipCheck users and systems to be monitored. See Chapter 2, "Getting started".
- learn to use the HipCheck mobile and PC clients to monitor systems, set alerts, and fix problems. See Chapter 3, "Using the HipCheck client".
- manage the list of systems that can be monitored by HipCheck and the users who are authorized to perform management tasks and receive alerts. See Chapter 4, "Managing HipCheck systems and users".
- check on the status of installed HipCheck agents, troubleshoot problems, extend the monitoring functionality of HipCheck agents for SCO UNIX systems, and remove agents. See Chapter 5, "Managing HipCheck agents".
How it all works
The HipCheck mobility service is a collection of the following components:
- HipCheck agent -- software that is installed on each system that you want to monitor. An agent runs in the background, monitoring the system's hardware and operating system status, responding to action requests, and generating alerts if a specified condition is triggered. Agents are available for SCO® UNIX® and Microsoft Windows systems.
- HipCheck client -- a graphical user interface that enables an authorized user to proactively monitor system performance, perform administration actions, and/or respond to alerts to correct problems. HipCheck is available both as a mobile client that runs on Windows Mobile devices and as a PC client that runs on Windows computers.
- HipCheck Mobility Server - the intermediary between HipCheck agents and HipCheck clients, providing user authentication and secure data transfer. This server is run and maintained by SCO.
- HipCheck Portal -- administration interface that runs on the HipCheck Mobility Server and can be accessed over the Internet. You use the HipCheck Portal web pages to set up systems to be monitored, and assign system monitoring, management, and alert privileges to users.
