A Upgrading HipCheck agents and clients
The HipCheck mobility service requires that all agents and clients in use by a Me Inc. account must be up-to-date with the current version of the account's HipCheck Mobility Server. Occasionally the HipCheck Mobility Server will be updated, to provide new functionality, enhancements, and/or fixes to problems. When you are notified of a server upgrade, you must also upgrade your agents and clients to continue using HipCheck services.
The HipCheck mobility service includes an automatic upgrade feature, which gives you the flexibility and control to keep your account up-to-date with minimal effort. This feature allows you to upgrade all of your account's HipCheck agents from the HipCheck Portal, where you can elect to update agents individually, in groups, or all at the same time. The automatic upgrade feature also enables mobile and PC HipCheck clients to automatically update themselves when they are out of sync with the server.
This appendix describes how to keep your HipCheck agents and clients up-to-date, including:
Upgrading HipCheck agents
This section describes how to upgrade the HipCheck agents that are installed and being used by your Me Inc. account.
Note: For help installing HipCheck agents for the first time, see "Installing the HipCheck agent" in Chapter 2, "Getting started".To automatically upgrade agents, see the following sections:
- "Prerequisites for automatically upgrading HipCheck agents installed on SCO UNIX systems"
- "Automatically upgrading HipCheck agents"
- "Troubleshooting problems when automatically upgrading agents"
To upgrade an agent directly on the system where the agent is installed, see "Manually upgrading HipCheck agents".
Prerequisites for automatically upgrading HipCheck agents installed on SCO UNIX systems
Before you can use the automatic upgrade feature to update agents installed on SCO UNIX systems, each system must have the curl package installed.
- For SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.7
- For SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0
- For SCO UnixWare Release 7.1.4
- The curl package is available as a security update at ftp://ftp.sco.com/pub/updates/UnixWare/SCOSA-2006.16/curl-7.15.1.pkg. To see if this software is already installed, run:
# pkginfo -l curl- If curl is installed, you see:
PKGINST: curl NAME: cURL CATEGORY: SCOx ARCH: IA32 VERSION: 7.15.1 VENDOR: The SCO Group, Inc. DESC: A tool for transferring data specified with URL.. PSTAMP: UnixWare 7.1.4 uw714mp4/bl1aa 2006-03-17 INSTDATE: Apr 22 2006 08:20 AM STATUS: completely installed FILES: 70 installed pathnames 7 shared pathnames 2 symbolic links 11 directories 3 executables 2498 blocks used (1249K)(approx)Automatically upgrading HipCheck agents
The "Check System Status" page at the HipCheck Portal allows you to identify systems that contain out-of-date HipCheck agents and then initiate automatic agent upgrades for those systems. To do this:
- Log in to the HipCheck Portal at:
- Click Check System Status. You see the "Check System Status" screen.
- Locate HipCheck agents that are out-of-date.
Run a system status check to see what version of agent is currently installed:
- Upgrade out-of-date agents.
Perform an automatic upgrade of selected agents: Note: Any customizations that were made to an agent (see Chapter 5, "Managing HipCheck agents") are preserved when an agent is automatically upgraded.
Verify that the upgrade was successful:
- In approximately five minutes, see if the agent upgrade has successfully completed by re-checking status for the selected system(s). You should see an Ok message in the "Status" column and the current HipCheck version number in the "Agent" column.
- If after ten minutes, a system status check still shows that the affected system is Down, or if the agent is still reporting an out-of-date version, the automatic update may have failed. See "Troubleshooting problems when automatically upgrading agents" for help.
Troubleshooting problems when automatically upgrading agents
If the automatic upgrade of a HipCheck agent fails, the following information may help you to identify the source of the problem so that you can try the automatic update again.
- For agents installed on SCO UNIX systems:
- Log on to the system as root and run:
# patchck logs- If you do not find anything useful here, run the following command to turn on additional debugging information:
# touch /tmp/patchck.debug- Now perform an automatic upgrade of the agent again. If this upgrade fails as well, review the /tmp/patchck.debug file for additional debugging information.
- For agents installed on Windows systems:
- Detailed information about the upgrade of an agent installed on a Windows system is stored in C:/Program Files/MeInc/HipCheck Agent for Windows/update.log. Check this file for information that might explain why the upgrade failed. When an upgrade is successful, the last message in the log should be Product: HipCheck Agent for Windows -- Installation completed successfully.
If you are unable to identify an obvious problem in any of these logs files, you may also want to review the agent installation troubleshooting information provided in Chapter 5, "Managing HipCheck agents".
You can also try installing the updated agent directly on the monitored system. For help doing this, see "Manually upgrading HipCheck agents".
Manually upgrading HipCheck agents
Note: Any customizations that were made to an agent (see Chapter 5, "Managing HipCheck agents") are preserved when you manually upgrade it.To manually upgrade a HipCheck agent:
- Go to the HipCheck Portal at https://<CommName>.hipcheck.me-inc.com/hipcheck/app, where <CommName> is the Community Name for your Me Inc. account, and click on Downloads.
- Download and install the current HipCheck agents for SCO UNIX and Windows systems. See "Installing the HipCheck agent" in Chapter 2, "Getting started" for detailed installation instructions.
Upgrading HipCheck clients
Note: For help installing HipCheck clients for the first time, see "Installing the HipCheck client" in Chapter 2, "Getting started".HipCheck mobile and PC clients that are older than the version of your account's HipCheck Mobility Server will not work. All client functions, with the exception of the MeInc menu, are unavailable until the client is upgraded to match the current release of the server.
When an out-of-date client attempts to connect to the server, you see a message that there is a new version of the client and prompts you to upgrade automatically. To do this:
- Click Yes to initiate the automatic upgrade.
- The current HipCheck client is downloaded to your mobile device or PC.
- When the download is complete, the out-of-date client turns itself off and then the upgrade installation begins automatically. All account information and client settings are preserved.
- When the upgrade completes, you need to restart the client manually.
If you prefer, you can manually upgrade individual clients. To do this:
- Remove the out-of-date client:
- For mobile clients -- connect the mobile device to the Windows system that was used to first install the client and run ActiveSync. Select Tools > Add/Remove Programs, unselect the SCO HipCheck checkbox, and then select Remove. This removes the client from both the mobile device and the Windows system.
- For PC clients -- select Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, highlight HipCheck Client for Windows, and then click Remove.
- Go to the HipCheck Portal at https://<CommName>.hipcheck.me-inc.com/hipcheck/app, where <CommName> is the Community Name for your Me Inc. account, and click on Downloads.
- Download and install the current HipCheck client that is appropriate for your platform (mobile device or PC). See "Installing the HipCheck client" in Chapter 2, "Getting started" for detailed installation instructions.
