Sun Solaris HcSCOUA installation dependencies

1. Sun Solaris:
   • SPARC and Intel x86 architecture both supported
   • Solaris version 2.8 (Solaris 8) and later supported
   • some aspects of HipCheck related to services and customization of applications as services, work best on Solaris 10 and later, due to the presence of Sun's Service Management Facility (SMF).

2. Java version:
   • Java SE version 1.4.2 or greater.
   • This will often be present on a Solaris installation be default, but if not, can be downloaded from Sun's Java website.
   • It is expected that /usr/java/ will point to the Java SE installation as a symbolic link.

3. Apache Tomcat Servlet Container
   • Tomcat version 4.1.34 must be downloaded and installed even if another version of Tomcat is already on the system. It must be installed into /opt/apache-tomcat-4.1.34/.
   • Optionally, following HipCheck agent package installation you can also install a simplified Tomcat enable/start script (see below).
   • On some Solaris installations there is another version of Tomcat (4.0.5) already installed as:

     
     system      SUNWtcatr                        Tomcat Servlet/JSP
     Container (root)
     system      SUNWtcatu                        Tomcat Servlet/JSP Container
     

     When the Apache web server starts, it also tries to start this version of Tomcat. To disable it, it is necessary to comment out this line from end of /etc/apache/httpd.conf:

     
     # Jakarta Tomcat support
     # include /etc/apache/tomcat.conf
     

   • Note also that when there are newer Tomcat 4.1.x versions, such as Tomcat 4.1.36, released for Solaris, these later versions will not work for HipCheck agent purposes currently. So you must get the Tomcat 4.1.34 packages which are specifically available at: http://archive.apache.org/dist/tomcat/tomcat-4/v4.1.34/bin/apache-tomcat-4.1.34.tar.gz.
4. Apache Axis SOAP Web Services
   • Apache Axis version 1.2 (with one modification) and Apache Xerces-J 1.4.4 must be downloaded and installed.
   • This is provided by HipCheck as a tarball to be unwound as follows:

     
     cd /opt/apache-tomcat-4.1.34/
     uncompress unix-axis-upgrade.tar.Z
     tar xovf unix-axis-upgrade.tar
     

     When it is unwound, it installs files into both the Java SE directory structure (extension directory) and the Apache Tomcat directory structure. If you are using Java SOAP for other applications on this system, you may need to contact SCO for an alternate installation strategy.

5. curl - Command line tool for transferring files with URL syntax
   • If not already on system, obtain SMCcurl package from Sunfreeware.com. Version 7.16.1 is adequate.
   • This and subsequent Sunfreeware.com downloads below maybe require additional prerequisite packages to be downloaded, depending upon what is on your system. Typically this might mean openssl-0.9.8e and libgcc-3.4.6, both available at the same Sunfreeware site.

6. Tcl - tool command language
   • If not already on system, obtain SMCtcl package from Sunfreeware.com. Version 8.4.9 is adequate.
   • Expected to be installed in /usr/local/.

7. Expect - programmed dialog tool
   • If not already on system, obtain SMCexpect package from Sunfreeware.com. Version 5.43.0 is adequate.
   • Expected to be installed in /usr/local/.

Sun Solaris HcSCOUA installation

Now you are ready to install package HcSCOUA, the HipCheck agent for Solaris, which is available from the HipCheck download area linked to from the top of this page.

Installation is done using a normal Solaris pkgadd command:

uncompress HcSCOUA-1.1.SUN.pkg.ds.Z
pkgadd -d `pwd`/HcSCOUA-1.1.SUN.pkg.ds

After the installation of HipCheck, if Tomcat does not start automatically after a reboot, or if it is not running as root after being restarted, a sample Tomcat start script is provided. Use these commands to put it in place:

cp /usr/lib/svcmon.d/extras/scripts/SunOS/tomcat  /etc/init.d/tomcat
/etc/init.d/tomcat enable

HipCheck agent auto update will fail if the Solaris packaging tools are not setup to overwrite existing packages. To do this, set 'instance=overwrite' in the file /var/sadm/install/admin/default.
